We absolutely LOVE our SmartMax discovery building sets (we have about 3 now). Really, the more pieces you have, the better, which is why I like this 42 piece starter set. Any fewer, and it's really not enough. Like magnetic tiles, these are great for open-ended play and spark lots of creativity! Our daughter has just started referencing their idea guide to inspire her building, while my son still uses them completely free form. They are extra awesome because you can construct buildings that are SUPER secure/difficulty to knock down. Kids are pushed to problem solve and learn about the relationship between the pieces, as not all colors pieces will "stick" together.
